Albums of the Year Pt. 7

“You’re Hellcome” by SAMURAI PIZZA CATS.

Some crazy metalcore band. I started with the awesome ‘Pizza Homicide’ video, then got used to the other songs as well. ‘Kill It’, ‘Fake’, ‘Alpha’ and ‘Freakshow’ are also great fun. I do not consume it everyday but when I do, so do my neighbours 😀

“Holocene” by THE OCEAN.

Background music for your geology class. It has a unique atmosphere, I can’t say any similar band. You must check ‘Atlantic’, ‘Subboreal’ and ‘Parabiosis’.

Albums of the Year Pt. 6

“ID.Entity” by RIVERSIDE.

As strange as it starts with the retro pop feeling this album takes me to an awesome journey. It’s like a great sci-fi movie – it’s polished (pun intended!), progressive and emotional. ‘Landmine Blast’ and ‘Post-Truth’ are my favourites.

“Rush” by MÅNESKIN.

Perfectly written, produced and performed scandal rock 😀 ‘Bla Bla Bla’, ‘Gasoline’, ‘Kool Kids’, ‘Mark Chapman’ were all played a hundred times this year – and the late comer ‘Honey’ is awesome too. I was lucky to see their live show in Budapest Arena in the summer. Don’t miss them out on their next tour!

“Endling” by KVELERTAK.

OK, I missed out on Kvelertak so far. This album is a blast. A fun mixture of different genres and the Norvegian lyrics are just the icing on the cake. ‘Likvoke’, ‘Endling’, ‘Skoggangr’ and ‘Svart september’ are my favourites.

“Terror Management Theory” by TEMIC.

Just another boring progressive metal album? First tracks might suggest that, but from ‘Count Your Losses’ Temic raises the bar and by ‘Acts Of Violence’ it’s clear we have another masterpiece on our hands. ‘Paradigm’, ‘Once More’ and ‘Mothallah’ cement the 10/10 score.

Albums of the Year Pt. 5

“Sonic Moons” by DOMKRAFT.

Psychedelic doom metal. It’s full of pain and one definitely need something to really enjoy the trip. The opening ‘Whispers’ will welcome you for the experience.

https://domkraft.bandcamp.com/album/sonic-moons

“Stone” by BARONESS.

Sad-sad progressive metal. It’s bit like The Pineapple Thief but more metal. Perfect for my current taste. While ‘Under The Wheel’ is my overall favourite, ‘Beneath The Rose’ is special also for me, as it’s so dissonant, like being ‘played’ from Slogan’s sheet 🙂

https://baroness.bandcamp.com/album/stone

“Anno 1696” by INSOMNIUM.

Finnish melodic death metal. Take this if nothing helps with real life… ‘White Christ’ is like a more powerful, more aggressive Lake Of Tears or the missing link between Paradise Lost’s Gothic and Shades Of God. ‘Godforsaken’ and ‘Lilian’ (Dark Tranquillity?) are also great choices. The bonus tracks on Songs Of The Dusk EP are perfect additions.

“Lightning Up The Sky” by GODSMACK.

‘Surrender’ bought me for the first time, then came ‘You and I’, ‘Red White & Blue’ and the others. One might have already heard these rock themes but Godsmack made them to perfection.

Albums of the Year Pt. 4

“Crimson & Stone” by VERMILION WHISKEY.

Southern stoner metal catches me once in every ten year, and this time it was this album. The cover art is quite lame but the music is on par with COC’s Blind thing. Give them chance and listen to ‘Good Lovin’, ‘Dissonance’ or ‘Atrophy’.

https://vermilionwhiskey.bandcamp.com/album/crimson-stone

“Anesidora” by ISOLE.

Doom metal is growing back on me lately, and once I opened Anesidora’s box I could not close it. This album is an all-or-none experience, start with the first song – ‘The Songs Of The Whales’.

https://isole.bandcamp.com/album/anesidora

“War Within” by ANY GIVEN SIN.

Imagine Evanescence’s Bring Me To Life with a guy at the microphone. This album has eleven equally awesome song. An ‘Insidious’ single would have been sold in a million copy in the early 2000s. The ‘Cold Bones’ ballad in two millions…

“Vidékek vannak idebenn” by THE DEVIL’S TRADE.

Bitter folk music amplified, metallized, improved. Having both English and Hungarian lyrics this album is a bit two-faced, but both faces are worth to look at. ‘All Kings Must Fall’ is surprised me with its Eddie Vedder style. Beside that ‘Fordulj kedves lovam’ and ‘Flashing Through The Lack Of Light’ are my favourites.

Albums of the Year Pt. 3

————-

“Truth Killer” by SEVENDUST.

These kind of radio rock albums are perfect for long travels – great vocals, easy to listen and understand. Won’t Stop The Bleeding, Superficial Drug and Messenger should be aired on daily bases : )

https://sevendust.bandcamp.com/album/truth-killer

————-

“We Must Leave You” by THROAT.

Dark rock/metal. The perfect music for the black & white days. It’s loud and silent, it’s calm and angry. Seven tracks only. I need more of this. Check The Transaction or Trespassing for a starter.

https://ihatethroat.bandcamp.com/album/we-must-leave-you

————-

“Beyond The Black” by BEYOND THE BLACK.

Radio friendly pop metal with a female singer. On paper it’s absolutely not my taste but they are perfect for driving and the album stuck in the car. With all its epicness I Remember Dying is my favourite song.

https://beyondtheblack.bandcamp.com/album/beyond-the-black

————-

“Exul” by NE OBLIVISCARIS.

Absolutely not radio friendly progressive death metal – with additional clean vocals, and violin. One really need some time to get used to these tunes. I can’t tell a favourite, start with the first track Equus.

https://neobliviscarissom.bandcamp.com/album/exul

Albums of the Year Pt. 2

“In Our Blood” by REDLIGHT KING.

Radio rock at its best! Cold Killer caught my attention as the first single, but this album is full of rock hits! I can’t even decide my favourite. Do You Wanna Live gives instant chills.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nobFSbGQufreNFng81-1ifrI4PH0uRH4k

“Destroying Kingdoms” by FLORIAN GREY.

German melodic goth metal is a whole sub-genre and Florian Grey masters it. This album has all the clichés, including the artwork, but yet it’s fun to discover. The Great Nowhere and Nothing Left To Love are the highlights.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_ndLaAqB1QAdL3gdbSeETmXdbDZddiG8U0

“The Sinner Rides Again” by KK’s PRIEST.

Heavy Metal. Period. With Ripper at the microphone it’s a perfect choice for all Judas Priest fans, a time machine to the early 80s. Select One More Shot At Glory and turn up the volume!

https://kkdowningofficial.bandcamp.com/album/the-sinner-rides-again

“Pitch Black Sunset” by THE HELLFREAKS.

One of the two Hungarian bands on my list. High quality modern metal with strong lyrics and performance. You will need some time to get close to the songs. Hit Me Where It Hurts and PBSS are my favourites.

https://thehellfreaks.bandcamp.com/album/pitch-black-sunset

Albums of the Year Pt. 1

——————-

“A Lump of Death: A Chaos of Dead Lovers” by UNVERKALT.

Cinematic post-metal with a suggestive female singer. Le Triomphe de la Mort is my favourite song, it has a kind of Bell Witch scent.

https://unverkalt.bandcamp.com/album/a-lump-of-death-a-chaos-of-dead-lovers

——————-

“American Gothic” by WAYFARER.

A great mixture of black metal and country/slide music. It’s good enough to hold my interest all along the 8-track album. For a favourite I would choose To Enter My House Justified, which has quite a catchy chorus.

https://wayfarercolorado.bandcamp.com/album/american-gothic

——————-

“II” by RAY ALDER.

A kind of Fates Warning Light. Not that progressive as the Arch/Matheos project, but Ray’s voice sells it. Changes is epic but the chorus in Waiting For Some Sun has a similar vibe to a movie soundtrack I really like – awesome!

https://insideoutmusic.bandcamp.com/album/ii

——————-

“A Man And His Nature” by ROPES INSIDE A HOLE.

Another post-metal album with wide tempo ranges. Time To Sleep sounds the best to me – Radiohead for metalheads, background music for a film.
